2015 - 2016

The Vikings

Information about the Vikings researched by Year 5 students. 

This slideshow represents the different activities carried out by Year 5 students during the Viking unit. Lessons include understanding raiding and settlement and the reasons for it; the destruction and looting of Lindesfarne; student-led research on different aspects of the Viking age...etc.

A timeline of dates and events around the time of the Vikings. Children had to choose the appropriate date and explain how the two events were linked. 


Here are some written and photographic sources of evidence which hint at the events which occurred at Lindesfarne monastery.


An explanation of what the children believed happened at Lindesfarne. The student has also included a series of notes which explain what he has learned about the Lindesfarne incident from this evidence.


Notes on Viking raids and what made them so successful.



Research carried out on two areas of Viking life. The research would have come from different sources i.e. blendspace lesson, internet research, information books, photographic evidence and artefacts.




Deductions and observations about a prominent personality (King Alfred) who was around Roman Britain at the time of the Vikings.

The Victorians


A detailed list of examples of primary and secondary sources of historical evidence.


The children spent some time analysing some different photographic sources to sort the photographs into photos of rich and poor children. They also included detailed notes on each photograph and their reasons for placing it in that category. 


These detailed notes explain what the children discovered about the industrial revolution, factories and industrialization during the Victorian era. 

2014 - 2015

The Ancient Greeks

Information about the Ancient Greeks researched by Year 5 students. The research was centred around three central questions. 

A home-learning task where the students had to make comparisons between the Greek city states of Sparta and Athens.

This lesson allowed the students to first retrieve the objects from a real archaeological setting then make detailed observations and deductions about the artefacts.


It was great to see the children using and applying their understanding of Athenian and Spartan city states to provide an effective argument for choosing  a city state to be a citizen of.


The Victorians

This lesson was focused on a single photograph and required the children to make deductions based on a particular piece of photographic evidence.


This is another example of a photograph being used to make observations and deductions about the past. This piece of work also includes research notes made shortly after the previous lesson on Victoria. 


Examples of reports on the effects of the industrial revolution on cities and countryside in Victorian Britain.

A fictional letter to Lord Shaftesbury detailing their gratitude for all the great work he has done for working children and the poor.
